Roman Era

The term ‘Roman Era’ refers to the period of time from 27 BCE to 476 CE.

The Roman Empire describes the territory of land in Europe and the Mediterranean that was under Roman rule. At its peak, Rome controlled 2,300,000 square miles of land. More than 1/5 of the world’s people were Roman citizens at this time.

In the late 3rd century CE, weakened by civil war and economic hardships, the empire was divided into two parts. The Western Roman Empire fell to Germanic chiefs who captured and ousted the final emperor, Romulus Augustus, in 476 CE. This is the date generally accepted as the fall of the Roman Empire.

Roman rule had a huge influence in many areas, such as government, religion, philosophy, law, technology, art, and language. These foundations of culture paved the way for the Renaissance in Europe and also for many of the facets of daily life we enjoy today.
