Mecca

Mecca, located in western Saudi Arabia, is the holiest city in Islam. It is the birthplace of the prophet Muhammad and contains the Masjid al Haram, the largest mosque in the world. Also known as the Grand Mosque, it houses a black cube-shaped structure called the Kaa’ba. More than 2,000 years old, the Kaa’ba is the structure to which every Muslim turns while praying - no matter where in the world he/she is.

One of the Pillars of Islam (Hajj) states that every Muslim capable of travelling should make the pilgrimage to Mecca, at least once in his or her life. The Hajj is to show solidarity with fellow Muslims and dedication to God.
