Gladiators

While legionaries fought for the glory of Rome, gladiators fought for the entertainment of Rome.

Gladiators were professional warriors who fought each other, wild animals, and condemned criminals in spectator-filled arenas in cities throughout the Roman Empire. In some instances, gladiators fought to the death. Given the dangers involved, it’s not surprising that few gladiators lived past the age of 30.

Gladiators who won many fights were hailed for their valiance and, in many instances, became popular heroes of their time.

Fun fact: the term gladiator comes from gladuis, the Latin word for sword.
