Bethany & Mt. Nebo
The root of three major monotheistic religions, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt are sometimes referred to as the Holy Land. This relatively small region is the birthplace of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.
Today, I travelled to two of Jordan’s significant religious sites. The first, Bethany beyond the Jordan, which is located along the Jordan River. Considered one of the most important Christian Holy Places, Bethany is believed to be the baptismal site of Jesus. Until recently, this was a disputed area and military zone between Jordan and Israel, and before excavations could begin the land had to be de-mined. Since 1996, Bethany has been an active archaeological site. We met with Rustom, the Head of Archaeology, to learn more about the excavations taking place. The highlight of my day was when Rustom invited us into the actual dig area which is off-limits to visitors. Once down in the site, I could see thousands of crosses carved into the stone by religious pilgrims who had journeyed to Bethany. This is just one of the major findings unearthed by Rustom’s team that are helping researchers and archaeologists learn more about life during the time of Jesus. Since digging began, archaeologists have uncovered baptismal pools, numerous caves, and more than 20 churches. For me, it was thrilling to stand where archaeologists are uncovering and preserving history! From Mt. Nebo, where, according to religious writings in the Torah and the Bible, Moses is buried. The most notable feature at Mt. Nebo is a sculpture known simply as Brazen Serpent. Created by Italian artist Giovanni Fantoni, this serpentine cross monument commemorates the death of Moses. In addition to its historical and religious significance, Mt. Nebo offers spectacular views of the Jordan River Valley and beyond. Pondering the power of faith,Ilana
