High School

Objective: This lesson is designed to make students aware of diverse culinary traditions from various countries and cultures.

Lesson: Begin by viewing the video segment on Mopani Worms. Then, have each student research and select a recipe from another culture or country. In their research, students should address the following questions:

  • From what region does the dish come?
  • Does the dish have any special significance for the student?
  • Have they sampled the dish before? If yes, can they describe the taste?
  • Does the dish have religious or ceremonial significance?
  • Does the dish have historical significance?
  • Are some of the ingredients native to the region?

Written Assignment: Have students write 1 to 2 paragraphs to introduce the recipe based on their research and the questions outlined above.

Once recipes and written introductions have been completed, have students create a classroom ‘Global Cuisine’ cookbook.

Student Assessment: After completing this lesson, students should have a deeper understanding of indigenous and traditional dishes from various cultures.

Curriculum Connections: English, Geography, Social Studies, Life Skills
