Objective: This lesson is designed to have students discuss different types of cheeses and what foods they can find cheese in.

Lesson: Host an in-class cheese tasting. We suggest the following cheeses for your in-class tasting:

  1. Brie or Camembert
  2. Feta or Halloumi
  3. Cashel or Maytag Blue
  4. Creamy Goat Cheese
  5. Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Romano
  6. Sharp Cheddar or Gouda

Of course, you may select any cheeses you prefer, but try to select cheese from different regions in a variety of textures, appearances, and tastes.

Provide each student with a copy of the Cheese Tasting handout. As they taste each cheese, they should describe and rate the cheeses. We have provided a list of adjectives that describe various types of cheese to help students get started. Encourage them to use their own words when describing each cheese; words like gross and good should not be allowed for this exercise.

Student Assessment: After completing this lesson students should be able to identify the different types of cheeses and how they taste.
