District Six Middle Elementary
and
Middle School
Objective: This lesson is designed to introduce the concept of land displacement. Lesson: Begin by discussing the blogs and the 2 video segments. Make sure students understand the concept of being forcibly removed from one’s home. Have students brainstorm other reasons people have been forced to move from their homes. Encourage them to discuss current or historical events such as Hurricane Katrina or Resettlement Camps in the Sudan. Topic For Written Assignment: Have learners imagine they have been forced from their home and given only 15 minutes to pack their belongings, taking only what they are able to carry. What items would they select? Which would be the most important? Have learners think about any essential items they might need: a toothbrush, medicine, warm clothing, and other personal items they use on a daily basis. Have students conclude their written assignment explaining why they selected each item, the items they chose to leave behind, and how they felt about this ultimatum.
