Shakespeare’s England
A New Religion: The Holy Trinity Church

Middle Elementary

Objective: The first lesson is designed to help students discuss places that may inspire them and what makes them special. The second lesson is designed to help students understand conflict and the different ways to resolve conflict.

Lesson 1: Shakespeare may have been inspired by his church. After reading and viewing "A New Religion", brainstorm with students places in your own community that inspire them. Why do these places inspire them?

Activity: Have students create an original piece of art that is inspired by a place in their community. Students can create a piece of artwork in any medium (drawing, collage, song, poem, photo essay, short video, etc.) Once completed, students should share their creation with the class.

Lesson 2: After reading and viewing "A New Religion," begin by discussing conflict in Shakespeare's time. What types of conflict are students familiar with? Do we see religious conflict in the world today? If so, where? How would you resolve personal conflict? How would you resolve larger conflicts?

Activity: Once students have a basic understand of conflict have students divide into two groups. Each group should elect a leader or spokesperson. Have each group take one side of a topic at your discretion (e.g. Should we shorten the school day? Should cell phones be prohibited in schools? etc.) Groups should list reasons for their view. Both leaders or spokespeople will share their reasons. As a class, discuss various ways for the two groups to resolve the conflict and come to a final agreement.

High School

Objective: These activities are designed to make students aware of religious conflicts past and present and their effects on people throughout the world.

Topic for Discussion: After reviewing the materials in "A New Religion", as a class discuss the Reformation and the creation of the Church of England to assess the students' understanding of the events. How do students think this affected people living in England during this time?

Discuss religious conflict past and present. What other religious conflicts are students aware of? (Some examples: the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades, the current Middle East conflicts, and the IRA.) How did these begin? Conclude by specifically focusing on conflict in the world today.

Topic for Writing Assignment: This writing assignment is designed to build on the discussion topic above. Have students select one of the conflicts mentioned during the dicussion and present their resolution. Students should focus on both sides of the conflict and what each side will "give up" or agree to in order to resolve the conflict. Have students outline any possible problems with their proposed resolution.
