Minding The Gap: London’s Underground
Middle Elementary
Objective: These lessons are designed to make students aware of various forms of transportation and how to read different schedules and maps. Lesson 1: Have students name various forms of transportation. Students should relate transportation systems to their own lives. (For example, riding a bike to school, walking to the store, carpooling to baseball practice.) Discuss and explain the rules of each type of transportation named. (For example, where you can/cannot ride your bike or using a carpool lane.) Student Assessment: After completing this lesson students should be able to identify various types of transportation and the rules that apply. Lesson 2: For this lesson you will need the following:
Using the London Underground map, have students help the ProjectExplorer Team travel from:
If using a local map or the map of another public transit system, select destinations that allow students to understand both direct routes and routes that require transfers. Before beginning, instructor should lead students through map keys and symbols. Then, as a class, work through several journeys aloud before having students read a map individually. Working either individually or in small groups to solve the problem, have students identify which Transit Line(s) they will be traveling by using the map key. If working in groups assign each group different routes and have them share their path with the class. Student Assessment: After completing this lesson students should be able to read map keys and symbols and identify the most direct way to travel. Curriculum Connections: Geography, Life Skills, Social Studies Middle School
