The Players: Prominent People from Elizabethan England

Middle Elementary

Objective: This lesson is designed to familarize students with important people from the English Renaissance and place them in their historical context. It is designed to help students make cross-cultural connections between 16th/17th-century England and the world today.

Lesson: Have students research and make a list of famous people during the Elizabethan period and what accomplishments made them important. Have them make a second list of people today who play a similar role in today's society, either in the US, in Britain, or anywhere in the world. (Example: Walter Raleigh was an explorer of the "New World" - Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to set foot on the moon.)

Assessment: Students should know how to identify what groups, people and projects played important roles in Elizabethan English society, and what groups, people and projects played corresponding roles in today's world.
