The Beginning: Visiting Shakespeare’s Birthplace

Objective: These lessons are designed to help students understand different types of homes and families. Lesson 1: Begin by brainstorming different types of homes. (For example, single story homes, two-story homes, apartments, etc.) Discuss with students who lives in their homes. What are the various rooms in their home and what are the purpose of these rooms? Discuss the locations in which people live. (For example, the city, the country, in a neighborhood, on a farm, etc.) What do students find special and unique about where they live? Lesson 2: Have students create an original piece of art that represents their home. Students can describe their home in any medium (drawing, collage, song, poem, photo essay, short video, etc.) Once completed, students should share their creation with the class. Student Assessment: After completing these lessons students should be able to identify different types of homes and understand diverse living situations. Curriculum Connections: Arts Education, English, Social Studies Middle School Objective: This lesson is designed to help students understand different types of homes and social status. Lesson: Begin by discussing items seen in "The Beginning" video of Shakespeare's home. What in the house gave clues about their social status? What interesting things did students notice, and what was missing? This discussion will serve as the platform for the following creative writing assignment. Topic for a Creative Writing Assignment: If a time traveler from Shakespeare's time were to visit your home today, what clues would he/she find in your home to help them understand your social status? What items would you show your visitor if you were a "tour guide" in your own home? Why did you select these items and rooms and why are they important to you? Curriculum Connections: English, Social Studies High School
Objective: This lesson is designed to help students explore possible career paths and the necessary education/training needed for specific professions and trades. Lesson: Begin by discussing what types of work apprentices performed in Shakespeare's time. Why was it necessary for people to acquire skills in this manner? What types of apprenticeships are available today? What are the different ways young people go about receiving job training? This discussion will serve as the platform for the following research and writing assignment. Topic for a Research and Writing Assignment: Have each student select a career that they are interested in. In this writing assignment, students must perform research to answer the following questions:
